Zainab Abdirahman-Khalif jailed for maximum three years for joining Islamic State

Adelaide student Zainab Abdirahman-Khalif could be released as soon as August after a judge sentenced her to three years in jail for knowingly being a member of Islamic State.

The now 24-year-old was arrested in May 2017 outside the Port Adelaide TAFE campus where she was a student.

During her trial it was revealed the young woman – who hadn’t travelled overseas since arriving from Kenya as a refugee – bought a one-way ticket to Turkey and planned to travel to IS-controlled parts of Iraq and Syria.
